Christopher Hitchens on Nonsense
One of my favourite Hitchens moments:
“In order to be Christian you have to believe that for 98,000 years our species suffered and died, most of its children dying in childbirth, most other people having a life expectancy of about 25, dying of their teeth, famine, struggle, indigenous war, suffering, misery, all of that. For 98,000 heaven watches it with complete indifference and then 2,000 years ago thinks, “That’s enough of that, we should—it’s time to intervene. The best way to do this would be by condemning someone to a human sacrifice somewhere in the less literate parts of the Middle East. Not—don’t—let’s appear to the Chinese, for example, where people can read and study evidence and have a civilization, let’s go the desert and have another revelation there.” This is nonsense. It can’t be believed by a thinking person.”

Yes, that’s a good quote alright. I wonder though why he chose 100k yrs ago though as the starting point.
I usually stick to pointing out that Christianity can’t be believed by a thinking person because it requires belief not just in ghosts, but that a ghost could impregnate a woman. Unbelievable.
Here is the full quote Dan:
Hope this helps.
Cool, thanks. Yes that explains that.
I have to admit, no one knows about non-sense more than Christopher Hitchens.
All though I do know people who know more about Christianity than an Atheist does. Source of knowledge is as important as the knowledge itself. Would you go to a dentist to get your heart operated on?
O_o Are you suggesting that Jesus was crucified and resurrected in China?
mcoville,
Of course not. Would you seek answers about life and the universe from a priest who doesn’t even have a bachelor’s in biology OR cosmology?
Dan, no I wouldn’t, I go to a pastor for information about theology.
I actually agree with you on something mcoville!: Theology and its priests are useless for inquiries about life, the universe, etc.
Cool.
“A theologian is somebody who is an expert in the unknowable, and has all the qualifications to prove it. Yeah, a real specialist.” Pat Condell
Who’s Pat Condell, and what makes him a specialist in the area of Theology?
You don’t exactly need to be a scantologist to know that shit stinks.
Your right Tim, and thats why I comment on Darwinian Evolution.
I’m not a scientist myself.
I’m not sure that the Middle East was one of the least literate places in the world at that time. Rabbis and their students were already studying and commenting on religious writings.
